With the film drama "Tartüff", one of the most important German film directors in
the era of silent films, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, succeeded in not only creating a
film, but
a film within a film.
A maid cares for an elder man only, because she wants to inherit everything after
his death. In order for her not to have to share the heritage with his nephew, she
defames the latter with his uncle. But the nephew does not give in; he appears in
disguise of a showman and presents the story of the malicious Mr. Hypocrite in his
mobile cinema, who tries to chisel his friend Orgon out of his belongings and his
wife. With this allegory, the young man is able to save his uncle from his maid`s
greed.
